Writing Process

preparationThe Writing process is a new, innovative way of helping children developing their writing.  It includes the following stages:

1. Prewriting:

First the teacher gives the children a prompt (i.e. title), then the children choose a prewriting strategy in order to plan out their ideas to help them out in their writing. Some prewriting strategies are story maps, webs, life maps, use of senses and ‘wh’ questions.

2. Drafting:

Here children write their first draft i.e. they write their story on a 4sheet of paper using the ideas they found in the previous step.

3. Peer Response:

When children are ready from their first draft, they find a partner and they read their writings to each other. Whilst one is reading his work, the other child attentively jots down any positive points and also any questions which might help his friend to improve his writing.

4. Revising:

With the Peer Response sheet in their hands, the children add up ideas to their writing.  During tcutandpastehis step they use the “Cut and Paste” strategy where they cut the parts of their writing which they don’t like and they paste (using tape) pieces of paper with their new ideas written on them.  New ideas are always written using a red biro.

5.  Editing:

After revising their work, children check out any spelling mistakes, tenses, punctuation etc. They can also use the Checklist sheet in order to check their work and see where they can improve (refer to Checklist sheet as an example).  During this step they use a green biro.

6. Publishing:

Finally, when they are happy with their work, they can publish their work by re-writing their story neatly. This can be done either on a new sheet of paper, or else printing it using the computer.

  • Some important information:
  • The above-mentioned steps should be introduced to the childrenpeer gradually and one by one.  When the teacher sees that one step has been mastered well, she can introduce the following step.
  • The following procedure shouldn’t be done in one whole creative writing lesson.  It can be divided in two lessons depending on the ability of the children.
  • Throughout the whole writing process the teacher should only be present as a guide to the children. Work is corrected when the children have gone through the whole process.
  • When correcting children’s work, teacher can use the symbols seen below so as to make this step even more interesting.  Obviously children should be familiar with the symbols beforehand.
